Encourage Reader Comments

Comments are the drug of choice for many Mommy Bloggers. We all love them! Here are a few tips to encourage comments on your posts.
- Ask questions. At the end of your post, invite readers to share what they think about the subject. Or ask them for a tip or to share their experience or expertise.
- Respond to questions. Make an effort to answer all questions asked in comments. Many times I’ll email the commenter directly. However, if it’s a question or particularly poignant comment that others might be interested in, I respond in the comments section also.
- Reciprocate. When a blogger comments on your site, try to visit their site also and leave a comment. This will become more difficult as your traffic increases and you receive more feedback, but do it as time allows.
- Write from the heart on an emotionally-charged topic. Vanilla posts will only get you so far. It is sometimes difficult to share strong opinions, and you very well may hear from readers who disagree with your point of view, but heartfelt posts do encourage reader interaction.
Do you have other tips for getting your comment-fix? Please, do tell!

I do the same thing. I respond to the commenter directly, but if it’s a question or something I think the readers might want to hear the answer too, then I will also respond in the comments.
I really have no idea why some posts illicit a big response and some don’t. I think it just depends on the subject and how it strikes a response in the reader.
